Today I want to tell you how I made a crochet Christmas wreath, one of those crafts that’s lovely to look at and also carries that something extra that only handmade things have.
For me, crocheting a holiday wreath has been the perfect way to ease into the season with calm, anticipation, and a bit of creativity. If you’d like to prepare for Christmas with care and a handmade feel, stick around. I promise you don’t have to be an expert to end up with a wreath that looks beautiful.
Why make a small crochet wreath?
I’ll be honest with you: I love holiday decorating, but sometimes the usual ornaments and baubles feel a little impersonal to me. Making your own crochet ornaments comes with plenty of advantages:
-Every year you pull them out of the box, you’ll remember the moment you made them.
-They’re light and safe, even if you have kids or pets at home.
-You can pick the exact colors to match your tree or your living room.
-They’re unique. No two wreaths come out the same, and there’s real magic in that!
What you’ll need
Here’s a simple list. Use whatever you have around the house, or dig into your leftover yarn:
- Yarn or cotton thread in holiday colors (green, red, white, gold, and so on)
- A crochet hook to match your yarn weight (4 mm, a G/6, for a medium yarn)
- A yarn needle
- Scissors
Step by step: crocheting your Christmas wreath
Note: this pattern uses US crochet terms.
Take yarn in a color you like and make a ring by wrapping it around your fingers 8 times. This will be the center.
Working through the center of the ring you’ve made, crochet 23 single crochets all the way around.
Chain 5, then switch colors on your hook, and in the next single crochet, chain 5 more in the new color. Keep alternating colors until you’ve gone all the way around the wreath.
When you’ve finished all the way around, cut the yarn and pull the tail through the center with a yarn needle. This helps the center sit rounder and firmer. You can leave one of the tails long to use as a hanger!
Ideas for personalizing your wreath
The best part about these ornaments is that you can make them entirely your own:
- Use sparkly yarn or gold metallic thread for a more festive effect.
- Combine several shades of green so it looks like real foliage.
- Make several small wreaths in different colors and scatter them across the tree.
I made some in classic green with little red beads, for example, and others entirely in white so they look snow-covered. They look beautiful among the lights!
